Evolving Agriculture Payments: The Shift from Paper Checks to Digital

RIPE FOR CHANGE

According to Bushel’s 2023 State of the Farm Report*, U.S. farmers said paper checks are still the leading payment method in agriculture. Eighty-two percent of respondents  reported that their grain payments are made with checks, and 83% said they pay for crop inputs with checks.

Paper checks may be the leading form of payment in agriculture today, but current trends show B2B check payments are steadily declining. The 2022 American Finance Professionals Digital Payments Survey showed that B2B payments made by check have fallen nearly 50% since 2004.

When asked about digital payment usage in Bushel’s 2023 State of the Farm survey, nearly 40% of farmer respondents said that they have used digital payment methods.. While the decline of check payments isn’t visible in the agriculture industry yet, it seems inevitable given the environment of shifting business and consumer preferences for safe and secure transactions coupled with efficiency and convenience.
